One of the gifts the church has attained in the modern era is the ability to interact with the global church in an ease of access never before seen. Communication, travel, and access to world news has never  been easier. For those in the church akin to reading world news, you may have heard about the girls kidnapped in Nigeria just over a month ago.

Being continents apart, it is difficult to navigate being the church who cares for these girls and their families. Helplessness is a feeling easily crept into, as the church in Canada has little power in protecting these vulnerable women in Nigeria. The question remains: how do we love our Nigerian sisters who are suffering?  How do we support them?

Beth Downey Sawatzky, along with a number of her peers, have made a step towards engaging in this question. In support of the hundreds of girls that have been kidnapped from their schools in Chibok, Nigeria, Downey Sawatzky is co-organizing an all night vigil to show solidarity.

The vigil will be held in the Assiniboine Park picnic area in Winnipeg, west of the zoo.

Starting at 6pm on Saturday June 7th, the vigil will run through the night and end at 6am on Sunday June 8th.

The vigil is meant to say yes to hope, and no to despair. The event's purpose is to cultivate solidarity and express to Nigerian people that the Canadian people stand with them.

"We hope to use the event as an opportunity to show our solidarity, express hope, and speak against fear and division," shares  Beth Downey Sawatzky.

Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly, provide their own snacks, and bring bring small lights and candles. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to wear red and bring friends.

The event is for all who are concerned and wish to express solidarity. While initiated by christian organizers, the event is meant for all people, regardless of denominations, faiths , or non religious beliefs.  All are encouraged to attend and demonstrate support.
