A simple prayer

God, our Mother and our Father,
Jesus Christ, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, our Comforter.

We offer our gratitude, for you are with us.
You are familiar without struggles and joys, and still you draw near to us.
You are Holy.

We offer you gratitude for your sustaining love,
For the relationships made and being made,
For our daily bread,
For the material we need to continue everyday,
For how you renew our spirit when we struggle

We offer you gratitude for your grace, as we learn to give it to others.
We acknowledge you in this journey, as a global family,
and we ask you for your blessings as we seek your will.

In your Holy Name,

Amen

This prayer was written while I was in attendance of the 35th annual general assembly for the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF), in Bogota, Colombia, earlier this month. It was spoken in three languages: English, Spanish, and French. I was attending as the Canadian delegate, and have currently taken on a student position as the North American regional representative on the executive board. WSCF is a global ecumenical peace and justice organization that was founded in 1895. It has chapters in over 109 countries around the world.

    Mother?
    Mother?
Are you serious? God is Father, not both.
    Feminism? Liberalism?
    Please don’t go there!

      Father/mother
I don’t know, Peter. It seems to me that if God wants to participate in the gender fluidity trend, that is his/her business. Of course, I don’t know God’s preference. In the meantime, I am not aware of any commandment against referring to God as mother.

    A Simple Prayer- Mother/Father
Peter, you can use any name for God you wish. Please don’t tell anyone else how to address God. Actually, God is neither Mother or Father. God is a spirit being which has no gender, and this a much more powerful way to think of God.

Prayer to God or Goddess or both?
I must question the author of the simple prayer as to why one would start right off with a controversy. Controversy and contention could have been avoided without calling God, Father, or Mother, by simply stating “God” in this so-called simple prayer. Hence my response.

How about we just stick to the truth? John 4:24 stipulates “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Who would call God a Goddess? God is the father of Jesus, and God is our Heavenly Father if we accept Jesus as our Savior. Jesus is “the head” of all true Christian men.

There are about 170 references to “God the Father” in the Bible and none as God the Mother. In addition there are about 10 verses in the Bible that clarify that God loves us as a woman loves her child.

The New Testament epistles contain just under 900 verses where the Greek word theos (masculine noun) is written in direct reference to God.

Does the truth change from men to women? Or should it be exactly the same?
Is this man (me) just as imperfect or searching for perfection impartially as if I was a woman?

    Just another pilgrim seeking truth,

    Upside-down world/Christianity
Our Father, who art in Heaven.
Russell, you mention gender, some gender confusion perhaps, like so many in these current dark times?
Nancy, please don’t preach to me on the Trinity.
Maybe the two of you should re-read the end of Revelation about editing the Bible.
