Sacred in front of you
I enjoyed reading Theo Wiederkehr’s article (“A localized pilgrimage,” January 2025). It asked the question of what a pilgrimage is and whether we have to travel far to meet God. If we define pilgrimage as a journey to a sacred place, it does seem to imply a fairly long trip to a distant place. But I also accept that one can experience sacredness in something right in front of you, if only we pause and really pay attention. This has been written about with passion and eloquence by authors like Annie Dillard, Wendell Berry and Thomas Berry, but the author that perhaps most closely matches Theo’s perspective is Amish writer David Kline in his compiled daily journal called Great Possessions: An Amish Farmer’s Journal (1991). I recommend it.
