MEI planning for in-class reopening

Abbotsford, B.C.

Mennonite Educational Institute in Abbotsford, B.C. plans a Stage 1 reopening of school in September for the 2020-21 academic year.

The Province of B.C. defines Stage 1 as a regular school opening with a 100 percent density target for students and five days per week of Kindergarten to Grade 12 in-class instruction.

The Ministry of Education will make a decision on the September school restart stage after extensive consultation with the provincial health officer (PHO).

“The [education ministry] and MEI share a desire to return to Stage 1 student engagement but will be guided by provincial health and safety guidelines to ensure a safe learning environment for students and staff,” says Vijay Manuel, the head of MEI Schools. “Furthermore, we will need to be prepared to pivot if needed during the school year, based on the directives of the PHO, and MEI will be ready. We anticipate a formal announcement from the Ministry of Education sometime in mid-August.”
