MDS seeks volunteers for Fort McMurray work

A year after the devastating fires in Fort McMurray, Alta., Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) has announced it will begin building homes there, beginning in June 2017. This project will operate differently from most MDS projects as it will have two volunteer locations in two provinces. All the homes will be built in Hague, Sask., as Ready to Move (RTM) homes and then delivered and placed in Fort McMurray. As volunteers construct the RTM homes, other volunteers will build basements in Fort McMurray. MDS reports that the fire destroyed more than 2,400 structures and nearly 600,000 hectares (1.48 million acres) of forest. It’s the most costly wildfire in Canadian history with an estimated $3.58 billion dollars’ worth of damage. Volunteers are needed for both the Fort McMurray and Hague sites.
