MDS monitoring Alberta fires, accepting donations

May 4, 2016

The Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) Alberta Unit and MDS Region V members are on standby in response to fires in and around the northern city of Fort McMurray, Alta. on May 4. Devastating fires have consumed the region and are forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Alberta history, according to news reports. “It is a continuing situation,” reported Glen Kauffman, MDS Alberta unit chair. According to Kauffman, some 60,000 people have been evacuated from Fort McMurray, with people in camps north and south of the city. “It is too early to say how and when we can best respond,” Kauffman said. “We will continue to monitor the situation.” At this point MDS is accepting financial donations for responding to the fires but is unable to accept material donations, such as clothing and other goods. —Mennonite Mennonite Disaster Service
