Everyday Epics

More stories of the past at Kumomoto. Stories that complex-ify. Japan not as a cohesive, evil, military power all seeking destruction of neighbouring nations, but as a land of people in various societies with each their own different story of life and love and suffering, dominance and loss.

There was a civil war as recent as 1877, which still shapes culture and society in this southwestern island of Kyushu. A sense of distrust, fear, but also of distinct identity and epic struggle. Of two clear sides and opinions still of who was right or wrong.

Nothing is as simple as it seems.

What myriad of stories shape who we are and become! Perhaps which and how we tell them will also be significant to our shaping. Perhaps living out these everyday epics as part of a larger story of faith is called discipleship.

“It’s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.”
― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
