Watch: MDS looks back at 2020

Mennonite Disaster Service didn’t let the COVID-19 pandemic stop it from having a banner year.

In a seven-minute video released on YouTube last Saturday, the binational organization—which cleans up, repairs and rebuilds homes that have experienced a disaster—outlines the unexpected opportunities and unexpected blessings that 2020 brought.

Watch the video now to get a look at the work volunteers did and the impact it had on the homeowners they helped.

More than 6,000 volunteers from churches across Canada and the United States gave their time and skills to build 79 new homes, complete 280 repairs, finish 91 clean ups and build three new bridges.

“That surprised me—that somebody would come all the way from across the state to help somebody they didn’t even know,” one homeowner says in the video. “That was amazing to me.”

Additionally, the organization’s Spirit of MDS Fund distributed $48,000 to 46 congregations in Canada who responded to needs in their communities. MDS is currently offering a new round of funding through that same program.

“How do we serve the body of Christ?” someone asks in the video. “It’s going where the need is.”
